The first company we chose to review is defensio.com. Defensio is a new startup launched October, 2007. It is a competing spam filter for blogs. It’s main competitor is Akismet. Defensio improves on previous spam filters by allowing better management and other tools. |
Initial Stages
Defensio offers a free version although they also offer subscriptions to higher-traffic blogs. Currently a professional blog costs $5/month for over 50k comments, $15/month for 100k-300k.
Technology
The website is coded in ruby on rails (RoR) and is hosted using amazon web services (AWS). If you’re interested a quick way to get started with AWS+RoR is with ECS on Rails. They are using namecheap.com for reistration which currently costs $9.29/year. They are using dnsmadeeasy for nameservers. Dnsmadeeasy is a good choice for ruby on rails deployments and is essential for AWS because of the dynamic nature of cloud computing.
Design
They used the design company helldesign.pl for design services. The site is centered in one 800px wide area which provides a good navigation area.

- Do you work on this project full-time?
- Have you formed a company? Is it formed as a private or LLC or corp?
- Are you taking financing?
- Have you advertised it?
- How much traffic do you get?
